Low‐Degree Melt Metasomatic Origin of Global Upper Mantle Fe Isotope Fractionation

چکیده
Abstract The upper mantle is heterogeneous in Fe isotope compositions, but the origin of heterogeneity needs understanding. Recent studies on oceanic basalts demonstrate that results from low‐degree melt metasomatism. However, whether this hypothesis global significance testing continental settings. Here we present an isotopic study intraplate alkali China, which are shown to have derived containing more metasomatized lithologies. show first‐order positive correlations δ 56 with indices metasomatism (e.g., [La/Sm] N ), which, together so‐far published mid‐ocean ridge data, define trends, substantiating causing variation. We, thus, suggest a globally effective process preferentially concentrate heavy isotopes metasomatic lithologies at conditions both today and Earth's history.

Di¡usive fractionation of trace elements during production and transport of melt in Earth’s upper mantle
We have developed a numerical model to investigate the importance of diffusive chemical fractionation during production and transport of melt in Earth’s upper mantle. The model incorporates new experimental data on the diffusion rates of rare earth elements (REE) in high-Ca pyroxene [Van Orman et al., Contrib. Mineral. Petrol. 141 (2001) 687^703] and pyrope garnet [Van Orman et al., Contrib. Mi...

Experimentally determined metal/olivine partition coefficients and diffusion rates will help answer questions relating to Earth's elevated Mg/Si ratio and will provide better tools for the determination of the origin of pallasites. It is known that the Mg/Si ratio of the Earth's primitive upper mantle (PUM) is elevated relative to all types of chondrites (possibly not CV chondrites), Mars, and ...

متن کاملEquilibrium iron isotope fractionation at core-mantle boundary conditions.
The equilibrium iron isotope fractionation between lower mantle minerals and metallic iron at core-mantle boundary conditions can be evaluated from the high-pressure 57Fe partial vibrational density of states determined by synchrotron inelastic nuclear resonant x-ray scattering spectroscopy using a diamond anvil. Ferropericlase [(Mg,Fe)O] and (Fe,Mg)SiO3- post-perovskite are enriched in heavy i...
متن کاملIron isotope fractionation by Fe(II)-oxidizing photoautotrophic bacteria
Photoautotrophic bacteria that oxidize ferrous iron (Fe[II]) under anaerobic conditions are thought to be ancient in origin, and the ferric (hydr)oxide mineral products of their metabolism are likely to be preserved in ancient rocks. Here, two enrichment cultures of Fe(II)-oxidizing photoautotrophs and a culture of the genus Thiodictyon were studied with respect to their ability to fractionate ...
